Although basketball in SA has al-ways taken a back seat to other national sports, we have an abun-dance of talent and many exciting people eager for information about the game they love. The sport coodinators of basketball are hoping to be able to provide the game here in South Africa, by building commu-nities that have interests in the game. Since there is not yet central resources for this information, they are adament to con-tinue to change, adapt and grow the sport in local communities.
The Gamagara Basketball League high school division was established in 2016 in order do develop the sport within the Ga-magara areas. The league consists of four high schools that include Langberg high school from Olifantshoek, Gamagara high school from Deben, Sishen intermediate school and Kathu high school. The four teams were playing against each other on 25 February at Sivos sports grounds. The first game was between Langberg high and Sishen Intermediate. Langberg walked all over their opponents by beating them 40 points to 0. Gamagara high had a walk in the park when they defeated Kathu high by 40 points to 6 points. The next games will be played on 11 March at Lang-berg high in Olifantshoek. The team that wins the league is set to walk away with a trophy and gold medals for the players in May 2017. The gist around the establishment of this League was to try and grow the sport in Northern Cape and mainly to develop kids around Gamagara region and help to realise their talents. The players who pre-sent outstanding perfomance during the games are granted an opportunity to join the Sishen Cobras team that plays at pro-vincial and national levels representing Northern Cape. Parents are encouraged to come out in numbers to support their kids during games.
